The City of Panama City received an $8 million grant from the Florida Department of Transportation to construct a 12-foot-wide multi-use sidewalk on West Beach Drive from Frankford Avenue to 6th Street.
This project is not included in the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) 5-Year Work Program. However, FDOT was granted the funds through a specific Florida Legislature appropriation to award the City the grant to construct the multi-use sidewalk. Based on this, these funds cannot be reappropriated or reassigned.
The goal is to build a scenic waterfront sidewalk along West Beach Drive that increases pedestrian and bike riding connectivity and safety for its users between Downtown Panama City and Historic St. Andrews.
The proposed multi-use sidewalk will be accessible to pedestrians, bicyclists, and non-motorized vehicles. In addition, the multi-use sidewalk features may include low profile lighting, benches, bike racks, water fountains, parking, and emergency call boxes along the pathway.
Citizens have the opportunity to provide input on each design concept option. The first open house was held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at the Bay County Government Center. The displays from the Open House will be available to view at City Hall on October 25, 2023 at 1 p.m. A second public workshop is scheduled to be held in December of 2023. Details will be provided as they become available. Public input received will be taken into consideration when preparing the final design for this project.
